With antidepressants, deeply depressed adults were targeted first. When that market was saturated, drug companies began selling the idea that antidepressants were "happy pills," suitable for use in not merely serious depression states, but even as "depression prevention!" (So-called "early intervention," where you use antidepressant drugs in perfectly healthy people in order to "prevent" depression from appearing.) This was a major breakthrough for Big Pharma: Now they could sell drugs to healthy people and were no longer limited to merely selling drugs to the sick. |
| When a sufficient number of children were drugged with antidepressants and amphetamines (like Ritalin), the drug companies realized there was still one non-drugged entity in a typical household that could potentially become a new revenue source: The family dog. So Big Pharma lobbied the FDA for the approval of antidepressant drugs for dogs, and in February, 2007, the FDA approved Prozac for dogs. Because, apparently, dogs have "chemical imbalances in their brain" requiring treatment with patented synthetic chemicals, just like children and adults, right? |

The massive scientific fraud behind the sickness industry
It is altogether curious that these "brain chemistry diseases" like ADHD and bipolar just happened to emerge in the population immediately after the drug companies started advertising drugs to treat them. If you are to believe the hucksters pushing these drugs today, diseases like ADHD and depression have spontaneously appeared in tens of millions of children and dogs. |

That amount of self-awareness amazed me, but it also tells me that even months of antipsychotics followed by years of antidepressants do not necessarily keep a patient from being able to make some good choices. Her doctor was opposed to JoAnn's decision, but she did get off her drugs, and suddenly JoAnn became a new person. She was going to have to care for Paul. She began cooking again. She then decided she would need to drive again since Paul would soon lose his license. She started studying and soon passed the driving test. She even began shedding extra pounds. |

Out of the 47 studies which were submitted to the FDA and used by the FDA to give approval to the nation's six leading antidepressants, only 4 had as many as 70% of the study participants stay in the studies until the end.30 How did those who stayed in differ from those who dropped out? Were they the kind of people who are more eager to please? Were they less depressed than those who dropped out? We do not know the answers, but for research that will lead to billions of dollars in sales as well as harmful side effects for users, we should expect studies with far more quality than that. |
| The FDA released to the researchers the data for the 47 clinical trials used for gaining approval for the six antidepressants. From this information at least five facts were learned that I believe would greatly surprise most Americans and most physicians.
The following "surprises" may sound familiar as they involve some of the standard "tricks of the trade" which were discussed in the previous chapter. How many can you find?
The First Surprise
First, these were not studies that lasted many years. |
| Agitation was so common with the SSRI antidepressants that it was an adverse event that manufacturers sought to hide. But how can an agitation effect be hidden? Think back to Chapter 7, Tricks of the Trade, and perhaps you can come up with an answer.
If all Prozac or Zoloft or other antidepressant takers were also given a tranquilizer (a sleeping pill), perhaps it would keep the agitation from emerging. But again I ask as I did in Chapter 7, would it be fair to mask one of the very real effects of a drug by giving the subjects in your drug study a tranquilizer? |
| Based on 24 trials the FDA stated that they believed the risk was twice as great for children on antidepressants as compared with those on placebo.18 It was unfortunate that the FDA did not issue a similar warning for adult use as the German drug regulators felt would be necessary if Prozac were ever to be approved in Germany. That was 1985, two years before Prozac began to be prescribed in our nation. |
| And why are many other antidepressants being prescribed to children when Prozac is the only FDA-approved antidepressant for children? That upsets me.
Anyone who prescribes drugs must be somewhat familiar with the fact that it typically takes several years before some of the drug's effects are discovered. They must also know that a developing child is more vulnerable than an adult. So why would anyone prescribe an antidepressant to a preschooler?

In other words, the link between antidepressants and violence has been known for years by the very people manufacturing, marketing or prescribing the drugs. As the author of the study mentioned above concluded, "The new issues highlighted by these cases need urgent examination jointly by jurists and psychiatrists in all countries where antidepressants are widely used."
That was last year, well before this latest shooting. The warning signs were there, and they've been visible for a long time. Medical authorities can hardly say they are "shocked" by this violent behavior. |

Okay, so get this: The researchers somehow believe that taking antidepressants can reverse osteoporosis even while their own research shows that the women suffering from the worst bone loss were already taking antidepressants!
Geesh. Sometimes I have to just sit back and shake my head in amazement when I observe the idiocy in modern medical research. And then when the mainstream media takes this garbage and reports it as fact, I have to vigorously shake my head yet again like a 1980's heavy metal band riffing on a guitar solo. It's like all these people are just complete idiots. |

In a recent review of studies, a total of 37 trials, including 26 comparisons with placebo and 14 comparisons with synthetic standard antidepressants, were evaluated. The authors concluded that "current evidence regarding hypericum extracts is inconsistent and confusing. In patients who meet criteria for major depression, several recent placebo-controlled trials suggest that the tested hypericum extracts have minimal beneficial effects while other trials suggest that hypericum and standard antidepressants have similar beneficial effects. |

When Sylvia in Chapter 1 first complained of the "love-handle blues," her previous doctor responded by giving her a prescription for antidepressants. Unfortunately, the inappropriate use of antidepressants to treat estrogen dominance is far too common. In recent years, more than 70 percent of the prescriptions written for the type of antidepressant called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) came from primary care and ob-gyn physicians—that is, physicians who have no special training in mental health disorders! |

Drug Treatment for Diabetes Patients with Depression
As a treatment option, antidepressants or other drugs used to treat depression can be helpful, preferably as a short-term (less than six months) measure (see "Drugs Used to Treat Major or Clinical Depression," page 184). Most antidepressants work by helping make certain natural chemicals called neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine) more accessible to the brain. Neurotransmitters are necessary for normal brain function as well as the control of mood. |

Also, my doctor on the West Coast had put me on antidepressants, but my prescription has expired. Please help me.
Sylvia's age, weight gain, and mild depression were common indicators of an underlying hormonal imbalance, specifically estrogen dominance. I told Sylvia that I could help her without diet pills or antidepressants. After following the plan for six weeks, she walked into the office a changed woman. She had lost nine pounds and an inch and a half from her waist. Within ten weeks, she celebrated with a shopping spree for new size 8 pants. |

These old technology antidepressants are associated with a high risk of side effects and are not commonly used.
?Other antidepressants. Various other medications that are not chemically related fall into this category and include bupropion (Wellbutrin), mapro-tiline (Ludiomil), and trazodone (Desyrel).
Antianxiety medications: on occasion, an antianxiety drug is given along with an antidepressant early in the treatment of the condition. Alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), and lorazepam (Ativan) are a few of the drugs in this group. |

Or, as described in shocking detail in the PLoS Medicine study mentioned above, a 12 year old boy was being drugged with antidepressants when the following took place. As reported: (emphasis added)
The independent forensic report on the case notes CP as saying that that night: "something told me to shoot them". He had initially reported this to be hallucinations and then said he thought it was his own thoughts. When asked to specifically describe what the experience was like, he said it was "like echoes in my head saying 'kill, kill', like someone shouting in a cave". |

But treating dogs with antidepressants, chemotherapy, diabetes drugs, statin drugs, osteoporosis drugs and other such chemical agents is patently absurd. Most pet health conditions can be easily prevented or cured with good nutrition, and more challenging health problems can be cheaply and safely solved with herbal therapies and other naturopathic modalities. There is no scientifically justifiable role in veterinary medicine for the majority of the pharmaceuticals now being pushed onto vets, vet techs, and pet owners.
Even the pet shelters are being influenced by Big Pharma. |

Imagine being arrested for not taking your statin drugs, antidepressants or blood thinners. Big Pharma is trying to create a society where "treatment" with drugs is mandatory, and anyone who refuses to take their chemicals will be considered a criminal. Parents are already being arrested for not subjecting their children to chemotherapy or giving in to ADHD drugs. If this trend continues, it won't be long before anyone who rejects vaccinations, drugs and psychiatric medications will be considered a criminal (or terrorist). |

Most people taking antidepressants are deficient in the B vitamins (especially folic acid). Supplementing with B vitamins has been found to either make the antidepressant drugs seem more effective or eliminate the need for the drugs altogether.

I've seen people reverse type-2 diabetes in a matter of just a few weeks, and I know that virtually everyone who takes prescription drugs of any kind (even "happy pills" like antidepressants, or over-the-counter painkillers) has a clogged liver and could experience incredible benefits from a serious liver cleanse.
If you've never done a cleanse like this, you probably have no idea just how good you can feel afterwards. You may, in fact, have completely forgotten what it feels like to have a more youthful, energetic and healthy body. |

As we reported in a previous NewsTarget article on Paxil:
Researchers from Cardiff University in Britain and the Cochrane Centre examined data on Paxil -- or its generic form, paroxetine -- from GlaxoSmithKline, legal cases and emails from nearly 1,400 patients who responded to a British TV program on antidepressants. The researchers found that 60 out of 9,219 people taking Paxil -- 0.65 percent -- experienced a "hostility event," compared to 20 out of 6,455 patients taking placebo, or 0.31 percent. |

Instead, I confine treatment with antidepressants to patients with real depression. Why do I even think about using these drugs when another doctor has already tried them? I reason that if doctors have trouble recognizing depression, they probably don't treat it well. My first step in treating depression, as with any other symptom I treat, is to try to get on the same page as the patient, by asking lots of questions and listening to the answers. Does the patient think depression may be playing a role in the severity of other symptoms and in the ability to deal with them? |

Half of them were on antidepressants. Researchers chose a form of exercise that is exceedingly convenient for new moms: walking with a stroller. One group of ten women walked with their strollers for forty minutes at 60 to 75 percent of their maximum heart rate three times a week and attended one social support meeting, while the other ten women, in the control group, carried on their normal routines. They all established a baseline score on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and were tested again at six weeks, and then at twelve weeks, when the trial ended. |
